And 0.5V is the maximum drop in USB-IF certified cables, which you will only see in long cables, such as two, three, or more meters. So if you plan to buy a long USB cable, look for a USB-IF certified cable from a reputed brand to avoid dealing with slower charging.
wjosten. I believe the max length for a USB cable is 5 meters, but you are correct, Apple only sells up to 2M's. I suspect you'll just have to "try" one of the 15' cables on the market & see if it works. Hopefully they figured something out in the 3 years since this was first posted. I read that USB standard limits the length of a cable to 5 meters for high speed devices and 3 meters for low speed devices. I guess that both mouse and keyboard belong into the low speed ones. I measured that I need 1.2 more meters. However there are no 1.2m USB cables available in the shops I have access to, only 1m or 1.8m.
If I'm not mistaken the maximum number of devices permitted for USB is 127. So there should be enough room for an active cable or two. For what it's worth, I control my rig with a 10m extension cord (passive) into a non-powered USB hub which resides next to the scope.
Now you know the maximum USB-C cable length is 5 meters. However, this can cause deterioration in power and data transfer speed. If you need a faster cable, 3 meters is the best for optimum charging and data transfer performance.
USB-C does basically 2 things: data and power ( especially from the cable and charger perspectives). The problem is trying to make it more complicated than that, or introducing inane "version" numbers. Simply forcing everything to be rated in those two aspects fixes the vast majority of the problems.
USB is required to work up to 5 meters and will become unreliable beyond that. The other communication standards you mention are much vaguer about their requirements. For SPI and I2C it depends very much on speed; 100kHZ may work for tens of meters, 1MHz may not work well beyond one meter.

The maximum limit for USB-C Gen 2 with Thunderbolt 3 support is 40 Gb/s. Only under certain conditions. To ensure this speed, the cable length should not exceed 18 inches (45 centimeters). Otherwise, the speed will be low. This is where things get a bit confusing. The Thunderbolt 3 cables fall into two categories: passive and active. You should

1 Maximum USB-C cable length: 3 m, 4 m and 5 m now possible! 2 Selection of good USB-C cables for data transfer and battery charging. 3 USB-C cables with a length of 1m. 4 USB-C cables with a length of 2m. 5 USB-C cables with a length of 3m. 6 USB-C cables with 4m or 4,5m length. 7 USB-C cables with a length of 5m.
You can connect up to four of the Kramer 25 ft (7.6 m) extension cables for a total added length of 100 ft (30 m). Please note that this setup requires that you purchase a USB-C to USB-A cable to connect with the USB-A Kramer cable(s): Owl Labs 6 ft (1.8 m) cable ; Owl Labs 16 ft (5 m) cable
