The Guild Wars 2 Win64 client — that's the thing you're most likely going to be using once the Mac client disappears — can work on non-Windows OSes through a "compatibility layer" application like Wine (e.g. here is the Lutris wrapper for Linux).
But really, just get one that has a 30 day money back guarantee, install guild wars 2, try it out. Return it if it doesn't work and try the next one up. Or even better, install the game on a flash drive and take it with you into a store in your area and see if you can play it on their demo machines. Just run the .exe from the flashdrive.
Its either 6 or 8 character minimum. Character names have to be atleast 2 words. 8-64 characters. That's all. I don't think special characters are allowed, or at least certain ones. I know for a fact that the asterisk ->* is NOT allowed in a password coming from my end user experience : (. The Core edition of Guild Wars 2 includes everything available in the free version along with no restrictions. It doesn’t have the additions that were made in the Heart of Thorns of Path of Fire
